What is AI SEO software, and how do you evaluate one?

"AI SEO software" currently describes two very different products: traditional SEO tools with a chatbot bolted on top, and tools built specifically to measure whether AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention a business at all. The second is a genuinely new category — search visibility and AI-answer visibility aren't the same thing, and a tool that only tracks one is only half the picture.

What the category actually needs to do

A real AI SEO tool needs to do four things honestly: check whether search engines can find and index the site at all, check whether AI assistants surface the business when asked — a citation and a hallucinated guess are not the same thing — read from the free data sources that already exist (Search Console, Business Profile) instead of re-crawling what's already measured elsewhere, and show its work. Every score should carry a source and a date, not arrive as a black-box number.

How this differs from traditional SEO software

Traditional SEO software was built around one channel: where a page ranks in Google's blue links. That's still worth measuring, but it's no longer the whole picture — a growing share of how people find a business now runs through an AI assistant's answer instead of a search results page. AI SEO software has to track both, because a business can rank well and still be invisible to an assistant, or the reverse. Bolting a chatbot onto a traditional keyword-rank tool doesn't close that gap; it just adds a chat window to the same one-channel measurement.

A quick checklist you can use today

Before trusting any AI SEO tool's claims, check five things: does it show a source and a date on every number, rather than just a score. Does it distinguish a cold-probe reading (what a model already knows) from a live-search reading (what it finds when it actually searches) — the two answer different questions. Does it read from free official sources like Search Console and Business Profile before asking you to pay for the same data. Does every recommendation come with evidence you could verify yourself, not just an instruction to trust it. And does it avoid the word "guaranteed" anywhere near rankings or AI mentions — nobody outside the search engines and model providers themselves controls those outcomes.

What to be skeptical of

Any tool promising guaranteed rankings or guaranteed AI mentions is overselling what's actually measurable — neither search results nor AI answers are controlled by a third-party vendor. The honest version of this software tells you what it doesn't know yet, not just what it found.
